This interactive map illustrates how much states spend on addiction, substance use and abuse. Of that spending, it shows how much money goes into prevention and treatment and how much goes to pay for the consequences.
Data for District of Columbia: Risky substance use and addiction account for at least 18.9% of the state budget. Of that amount, 3 cents of every dollar goes to prevention and treatment while 97 cents of every dollar goes to pay for the consequences of our failure to prevent and treat risky substance use and addiction.
