Drug Addiction
Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a chronic disease characterized by difficult to control compulsive use of drugs despite knowing its harmful consequences. The initial decision to take drugs is often voluntary for a lot of people. However, repeated drug use has been proven to lead to brain changes that interferes with an addicted person’s ability for self-control and resist the intense urges to take drugs. Drug addiction is considered a relapsing condition because these persistent brain changes and people in recovery from drug use are continuously at risk for returning to the habit of drug use even after several years sobriety. While relapse is common for addicted individuals, this doesn’t mean that addiction treatment doesn’t work or that long-term recovery is not possible. With chronic health condition such as drug addiction, treatment should be consistent and ongoing, as well as continuously adjusted or modified to fit every individual’s response to treatment. At Stonegate Center, experts are ready to speak to you or your loved one on how to battle drug addiction.
Addiction’s Impact on the Brain
Drug addiction affects the brain on so many levels. It gets flooded with chemical messenger dopamine and its reward circuit causes euphoric feeling. The chemical compounds in various drugs or substances – opioids, methamphetamines, sedatives, stimulants, alcohol, opioids, and alcohol – get into the brain and enters the bloodstream upon use. Once these chemicals enter the brain, they cause users to lose control of their inhibitions or impulses and the cravings for the harmful drugs. When the brain starts to develop intense stimulation and craving for that euphoric feelings, that’s when one develops substance addiction, causing continued use of substance. The brain adapts with continued use of drugs by developing tolerance, reducing its ability to respond to the reward circuit compared to the initial high felt during the first time drug was taken. This tends to make individuals take more drugs to achieve the same high felt the first time. These brain tolerance often lead to the the individual’s decreased ability to derive pleasure from other things or activities they once enjoyed, such as food, sports or sex. Long-term drug addiction can cause brain damage and result in death.
Brain Functions Affected by Addiction
As an organ, the brain functions to regulate temperature, emotions, decision-making, breathing and coordination. It also affects the body’s physical sensations, emotions, compulsions, habits and cravings. Abuse of harmful substances or drugs can alter the brain’s function.
